Torrija
Torrija is the Spanish version of French Toast, the main difference is the bread and that French Toast is made with more eggs and more butter while Torrija has more of a cinnamon taste and in our opinion tastes “lighter”. Torrija is the perfect dessert for when you don’t really know what dessert to make and don’t have much time - the best thing about Torrija is that you can make it in front of your guests very quickly as it needs to be served warm - and unless they are vegan they will always love it!
The most important thing when making Torrijas is the bread - we found some very good butter bread at Globus on Bahnhofstrasse and usually use this one but you can also use a good Baguette or a “Zopf” - just make sure it is one day old and not fresh fresh. My guilty pleasure is Torrija with a little bit of Nutella on top - it is to die for!
Prep Time: 5 Minutes
Cooking Time: 10 Minutes
Ingredients (for 4 Torrijas)
Butter Bread (1 day old) - 4 slices
Milk - 600 ml
Sugar - 100 g
Cinnamon Stick
Eggs - 3
Olive Oil to Fry
Cinnamon Powder - as much as you want
Preparation:
We start making the Torrija by heating the milk with the sugar and the cinnamon stick.
While the milk, sugar and cinnamon are heating up you can cut the butter bread in slices of 2 cm. You usually serve one or 2 slices per person depending how much dessert you want :)
When the milk starts to boil remove it from the heat and pour it into in a deep tray/ pot
In a separate bowl beat the eggs
In a pan we heat the olive oil (medium-high, just make sure we don’t burn the oil)
Everything is ready now. We dip the bread in the milk until it is completely soaked (don’t leave it too long or the bread will start to fall apart). Then dip it in the egg (both sides) and straight to the pan to fry.
Once it is golden on one side we turn the Torrija and fry the other side until golden.
Remove the excess of oil with a paper towel and put in a plate. With a spatula press the torrija and dust it with cinnamon powder.
