Zürich Food Markets
The first step when creating a delicious dish is choosing the best ingredients. When cooking at home I really try to buy local and seasonal products as much as possible, yes I also eat my papaya once in a while but I try to make choices that will be better for my health and for the planet. When choosing avocados for example, try to buy the ones from Spain (yes they are a bit more expensive but at least they didn’t have to be flown in from the other side of the world).
Going food shopping to a market at least once a week has really changed the way I see food and the way I create dishes. Markets can inspire you and you can see what the freshest ingredients are and make something that tastes a thousand times better. my favorite food markets in Zürich are the Zollikon Market and the Bürkliplatz Market but there are really so many to choose from and discover.
Another delicious thing about these markets is that you will most definitely always find someone who sells fresh handmade pasta or raviolis - I have tried so many and have always loved them. Below you will find a list of the main markets in and around Zürich and their opening times.
Gemüsebrücke Markt
A very cute market in the very center of town. Go here if you are looking for fresh flowers or vegetables.
Opening Times: Saturday 6 am to 12 pm
Helvetiaplatz Markt
This is probably the “hippest” market in town, with many cultures present in the stalls you will definitely find the biggest variety of fresh produce and already made goods.
Opening Times: Tuesday & Friday 6 am until 11 am
Bürckliplatz Markt 🌟
As mentioned before, this is definitely one of the best markets in Zürich. It is centrally located which makes it a fun activity for tourists and locals alike. In Bürckliplatz you will find food, farm products as well as beautiful flowers.
Opening Times: Tuesday & Friday from 6 am until 11 am
Tessinerplatz Markt
Why do I love this market? Because it’s open all day and is a great place for a quick lunch stop! Tessinerplatz is a little smaller than other markets but it is very centrally located and you can buy fresh fruits and veggies while enjoying some lunch delicacy from the Greek stand.
Opening Times: Thursday from 10:30 am to 7 pm
Sihlcity Markt
Another great market if you don’t want to wake up too early or if you want to use your lunch break to combine eating with market shopping. The Sihlcity Markt is located right next to the Sihlcity shopping center and has a bit more of a “modern” feel to it.
Opening Times: Thursday from 7 am until 1:30 pm
Oerlikon Markt
This is one of the largest markets in Zürich, located right behind the the Oerlikon Train Station. It definitely has a lot of variety but is not as “pretty” as the markets closer to town.
Opening Times: Wednesday 6 am until 11 am and Saturday 6 am until 12 pm
Alstetten Markt
Another great neighborhood market - not necessarily a market I would go out of my way for but if you are around the area it is definitely worth as stop! Lindenplatz, where the market is held is very cute and cozy.
Opening Times: Wednesday 6 am until 11 am and Saturday 6 am until 12 pm
If you want something a bit different or are something that is not in the city center:
Viaduct Hall Market 🌟
This is not a market per se but rather a very nice food store filled with delicious regional delicacies. You will find farmers and butchers and the quality is always extremely high. We definitely recommend going here as it has more of a Spanish/ Italian closed market feel and you can also go on rainy & cold days. The great thing is you can also have an apero and eat here directly.
Opening Times: Monday to Saturday from 9 am until 8 pm
Rapperswil Markt
Rapperswil is one of the cutest towns around lake Zürich and it is definitely worth a trip if you have never been. If you happen to go on Friday we highly recommend checking out the market as in our opinion it has the best varieties of cheese as well as fish.
Opening Times: (Mid March until the end of November) Friday 7:30 am until 11 am
Zollikon Markt 🌟
Another on of our favorite markets - it ticks the box for everything we want: it’s cute, the products are delicious and the offer is very good. You can combine your trip to the Zollikon Markt with a bike ride around Küsnacht or a nice walk around Zürichberg.
Opening Times: Tuesday and Saturday from 6 am until 12 pm
