Meatless Meatballs with Affechrut
This year more people than ever are participating in Veganuary (Vegan January) and more people then ever are deciding to reduce their meat consumption. In Switzerland 14% of the population follow a meat free diet and out of these around 300’000 people are fully vegan. Being a vegan in Switzerland is not as hard as you may think - yes we are known for our delicious cheese but vegan choices are popping up everywhere and vegan products are becoming more mainstream.
This month we decided to try out some natural vegan products and Affechrut was on the top of our list. Affechrut makes a Vegan substitute for minced meat that you can use to make meatballs or for example also Hamburgers. The great thing about the Affechrut mince mix is that it’s made with natural ingredients (it’s not one of those products you get scared at when reading the list of ingredients). All you will find are peas, flax flour, spices, salt, potato starch, sugar, mixed mushrooms and citrus fibers. All of this at 345kcal for 100g (one pack of 125g is perfect for 2 people) so this means it’s also great for your diet.
We decided to make meatballs with our first mince mix and were very happy with the results - we decided to serve them with some vegan yogurt and spices.
Prep Time: 5 Minutes + 30 Minutes Resting
Cook Time: 10 Minutes
Ingredients for 2 people:
Affechrut Classic- Hack - 1 Pack
Water - 200mL
Sunflower Oil - 50mL
White Onion - 1 small (optional)
Preparation:
Place the Affechrut Classic Hack mix in a bowl, add the water, sunflower oil and then thinly chopped onion.
Mix everything vigorously with your hands and let the mixture rest for 30 minutes (outside of the fridge).
Take your mixture and start making small balls with it (you should be able to make around 8/10 balls) - try to make them all the same size so that the cooking time is the same for all.
Heat some sunflower oil in a pan (enough to lightly fry - do not fully cover the balls in oil though). Cook for around 3/4 minutes on each side at medium / high heat - the heat should not be too strong or else you will burn the outside and the inside will remain raw.
Leave to cool and serve with sauce, rice, pasta or with vegan yogurt.
