How to make açaí at home
Açaí have quickly made their way into our daily lives with thousands of açaí bowls being sold worldwide and it really seems like some of us can’t live without them anymore. But what is açaí and where does it come from? Açaí berries are found on açaí palm trees in South America and the word means “fruit that cries” in a native language. Açaí berries have been used for centuries by the indigenous people of the Amazon and have now been branded as a “super food” thanks to their unique nutritional profile:
Vitamin A
Calcium
Antioxidants
Fiber
and all this for only 80 calories per frozen pack
Açaí bowls are often linked to weight loss and people are going crazy for them and although we love açaí bowls we also think that it is important to understand that an açaí bowl is not always “healthy”. If the bowl is topped with granola, dried coconut, peanut butter etc it can become quite sweet and loaded with sugar so we try to use homemade toppings only and use more fruit than granola etc. As with many super foods it really depends how you eat them and what you eat them with - top your açaí bowl with chocolate and you’ll of course also be eating the calories of the chocolate - top your açaí bowl with nuts and you will benefit from the properties that are inside the nuts.
Below you will find out how to make the best açaí bowl at home and some topping ideas to enjoy this berry to the fullest.
Where to buy it?
We buy our açaí frozen at Alnatura. We find this to be the best option as we love The Rainforest Company and what they stand for.
Making your home made açaí
Take your bag of frozen açaí straight from the freezer and put it in a mixer, add a frozen banana (peel and cut the banana before putting it in the freezer) and 30 mL of oat milk. Mix everything together until all the frozen ingredients have formed a pasty substance. Your açaí is pretty much already done! Place it in a bowl and add your toppings. You can also put it back into the freezer - the most important thing is that the açaí is very cold when you eat it.
Topping Ideas
1) Peanut butter, strawberries, banana and chocolate
2) Kiwi, granola, coconut flakes and granola
3) Strawberries, blueberries, mango, chia seeds
